Someone told me there's a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair

Going to California, yes I am ... for the very first time. Only for four nights, to attend a conference - - man I wish it could be longer, and I wish I could do fun things instead of conference things. But I am so excited to be going.

I've always wanted to see California, but have never been. Until October that is. I just made all my flight and hotel reservations. Woo-hoo!

So, anyone out there live in San Diego? Know any good places to eat? Touristy stuff I just gotta do while I'm there? I'll be short on time, but hey, this might be the only time I ever get to go; if I have to skip out on some of my conference, well, shhh ... let's just don't tell anyone.

Having been born in California and having spent a lot of my childhood there, I can tell you that California is fucking overrated. Having said that, however, it is imperative--absolutely fucking necessary--that you go to In-N-Out. You must do it.

Here's a primer on the menu. Your choices are burger, cheeseburger, or double-double, which has two patties and twice the cheese. Go with whatever you think is appropriate, but get ask for it "animal style." They'll put some fucking dressing and fried onions on it. It's awesome. Also, get some fries. And a shake. But more importantly, sit back and watch as they make your meal right before your eyes. You can even watch them cut up the potatoes for the fries.

Also, keep an eye out on the various packaging for references to passages from the Bible.

Wow. I couldn't disagree more.

I was born in Hollywood, grew up near Lake Tahoe, and have lived in San Francisco for about 8 years. I love it here. You have the ocean, the mountains, deserts, red wood forests, it's great.

I should say I'm not that familiar with San Diego, but I've visited a few times and my gf went to school down there. Here are a few things off the top of my head.

If you are renting a car, definitely drive up and down the Pacific Coast Highway a bit. It hugs the coast all the way up CA, and it's a beautiful drive.

San Diego Zoo is pretty amazing. I wouldn't bother with the wild animal park.

La Jolla-beautiful coastline and fun stuff to do. Touristy, but definitely worth it on your first trip. They have tide pools and a great beach around there. Also Mission Beach up a ways has a sort of boardwalk that might be fun.

Mexican Food-Is amazing down there. Especially the fish tacos. Tons of divey little taquerias that end in "-berto"

In-N-Out is pretty good, but it's still fast food. Just good fast food.

Downtown LaJolla--great shopping and food. There is an authentic Thai place there.
Rubio's fast food tacos beat the hell out of Taco Bell. They have fried fish tacos as well as grilled Mahi Mahi tacos/burritos.
Old Town, San Diego--authentic Mexican food. There is a famous place where they make tortillas in the window that always has a big line outside.
Torrey Pines--you can hike down to the beach.
